Grass seed quantity calculator

Calculate grass seed weight, whole bags, and leftover seed using the rate on your bag.

How to use this calculator

Use the label rate for your grass mixture and application, such as a new lawn or overseeding. Measure the area to seed, excluding paths and planting beds. Enter the actual package weight to calculate whole bags.

The formula

Seed weight (lb) = lawn area (sq ft) × rate (lb per 1,000 sq ft) ÷ 1,000. Bags = round up(seed weight ÷ bag weight). Leftover = bags × bag weight − seed weight.

A worked example

2,500 sq ft at 4 lb per 1,000 sq ft needs 10 lb. Two 5 lb bags cover it exactly. At 2,600 sq ft, the same rate needs 10.4 lb, so three bags leave 4.6 lb unused.

Assumptions & limitations

The example rate is illustrative, not a recommendation. Species, mixture, site conditions, and seeding purpose change the appropriate rate. No automatic extra-seed allowance is added; more seed is not assumed to be better.

Common questions

Should I use the same rate for overseeding?

Use the rate specified for overseeding on your product label or relevant local guidance. It may differ from establishment rates.

Why does the calculator round bags up?

The required seed mass can be fractional, but packages are generally bought whole. The leftover is shown separately.
